The Benefits Of Kawakawa For Eczema

Kawakawa has been used in rongoā Māori (traditional healing system) for centuries. Kawakawa leaves contain a component called myristicin which helps trigger the release of nitric oxcide from cells. The release of nitric oxcide is the bodys’ anti-inflammatory response and helps naturally calm the skin, and reduce inflammation and itchiness.

What this means is that the plant is soothing and helps with the reduction of blemishes, rashes and relives symptoms associated with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. The anti-inflammatory response in Kawakawa leaves can be so strong that it actually produces a numbing affect which is why the leaves can be chewed to relieve toothache and has shown to reduce muscle pain when applied.

Eczema & Psoriasis

Eczema is a skin inflammation of dryness, redness and itchiness. It can range in severity from dry and flaky skin to cracked and oozy skin. Kawakawa Balm has shown to be an effective and natural way of relieving eczema symptoms, as the strong anti-inflammatory properties can reduce itching and pain.

Kawakawa also contains a plant agent called myristicin which actually reduces anti-inflammation markers, like nitric oxide, in your skin cells. So it's amazing for treating swelling and flare ups caused by eczema.  Also - eugenol, an antiseptic chemical, is an active compound existing in kawakawa that can naturally kill bacteria.

Why is Kawakawa Good for Psoriasis?
Psoriasis, on the other hand, is a frustrating and challenging autoimmune disease of the skin. When the immune system, normally our body’s best friend against illness, mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, you can get whole patches of your body turning a shade of colour from red to purple as well as becoming scaly, dry and itchy.

Kawakawa leaves contain myristicin, a known immunosuppressant. This active compound is important for it blocks the body’s immune response that is causing the death of healthy skin cells!

What our Kawakawa Balm is made of:

We use only 3 ingredients in your Kawakawa Balm and include a high amount of kawakawa extract in our formulation to enhance its therapeutic qualities. Each balm is handmade by our team on Aotea, Great Barrier Island using flora that we grow ourselves.

Our Kawakawa Balm contains the plant agents and chemicals extracted from the kawakawa leaves that we pick and infuse into sweet almond oil. Next we add mānuka oil and beeswax to complete the balm.

Other uses: Aside from the uses already mentioned, the plant agents in Kawakawa also make it perfect for minor cuts and grazes, pimples, chapped lips and nappy rash. A protective coat of Kawakawa Balm can save the skin from swelling, excess evaporation and allow it to regenerate. Click here to learn more about our Kawakawa balm
